Ten boys from the Cyclone powerlifting team traveled to Lexington to compete Saturday, December 2, at the Lexington Powerlifting Championship. The team saw a large meet with a line-up of very stiff competition from all around the state.
The Clearwater-Orchard boy’s team finished in fourth place overall. Among the other teams competing Lexington took home first. Beatrice followed in second with Columbus High taking third place. Finishing behind the Cyclones was Columbus Scouts in fifth place. Columbus Lakeview took sixth with Maxwell wrapping up in seventh.
Among the Cyclones was the lone gold medalist Creston Bertschinger lifting a total of 1,030 pounds in the 165 pound weight class with a body weight of 158 pounds. With this lift, he was also able to earn him a second place in the overall male lifter of the meet award which was based on strength index.
Other medal winners for the Cyclones included Cade Mlnarik 5th place (123 lb. class), Shawn Buxton 5th place (220 lb. class), Zane Herley 4th place (275+ lb. class). Others competing are Derek Maxwell 6th place (148 lb. class), Tyler Wright 10th place (165 lb. class), Ira Lampert 7th place (181 lb. class), and Caleb Krebs 12th (198 lb. class).
In the junior high class, Gunnar Shabram placed 1st place (165 lb. class) and Wyatt Shabram joined in 1st place (114 lb. class) competing as exhibition lifters in the high school meet.
The powerlifting season will continue with their next meet in Beatrice on January 13. On March 24, the lifters will head to Parkview Christian High School in Lincoln. The Class D State Meet will be hosted at Parkview Christian High School in Lincoln on March 24. The Cyclones will then host their annual AAU Powerlifting Meet set for April 14. Finally, they will head to the Cornhusker State Games on July 21.
