2019 Social Media - Live From Antelope County
We want our readers/viewers to feel like they're a part of events, even if they are not attending them. That's why with social media and Facebook Live, those watching can be a part of the event. These examples showcase that.
Sheriff Bob Moore was surprised with an award over the summer, so went live and allowed our readers to be a part of it, rather than simply reporting on the story after it happened. We did print a more in-depth story and nice photo, but social media gave us a different way to reach our audience. Just like if they were there, those watching had to wait a few minutes for him to walk in. But they waited and almost 10,000 views later, it was a great surprise with about 300 comments. We received many thank yous.

We used Facebook Live to engage our viewers after we received a message saying four high school juniors from Texas would be driving through our area on their way to nearby Knox County with hay for flood victims to feed their animals. This was following the flood, and their grandmother tracked us down and we set up a place for them to stop and chat. They made it all the way to Northeast Nebraska without any media attention, which is incredible. So we used Facebook Live to talk to the boys about what they were doing, why and where they were going. It wasn’t long until an officer showed up to escort them through town. People online went absolutely crazy. It had 60,000 views, 1,500 likes, 299 comments and more than 670 shares. It was a great feel-good story that people wanted to engage with.

We utilized Facebook Live for meeting coverage as well as special events. We stream most public meetings from County Commissioners to City Council meetings. The local officials have grown to appreciate us streaming because they are able to communicate directly with the public. It’s not uncommon for the mayor of Neligh to refer to a text message he received during the meeting from someone watching who had a question or for the mayor to speak into the camera to talk to the public. The county commissioners are now utilizing a microphone system for better volume for those watching at home or work. We average more than 2,500 views per meeting.

Another example of Facebook Live was when we went live at Thriftway Market's spirit tasting. Yes, we had a lot of drinks on camera, but again, those watching felt like they were a part of it — and loved it (3,000 views).
