Captain Edwin F. Spar, USN (Retired) passed away on February 11, 2018 at his home in Springfield, Virginia. He was 87 years old. Born in Walnut, Nebraska to Fred and Hazel [Butterfield] Spar in 1931, Ed started to school there and then attended four years at a rural school near Battle Creek. He moved to Orchard with his parents in June 1941 and graduated as salutatorian in the class of 1948 at Orchard High school. After a year of NROTC at the University of Nebraska, he was appointed to the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD and graduated with the class of 1953, commencing a 27-year career in the US Navy. In December 1954, he married the love of his life Madelene Spar, an Orchard, NE hometown girl, daughter of Ray and Ethel [Hille] Clifton who resided most of there lives near Orchard and later in Fremont. Capt. Spar had a long and distinguished naval career. As a young officer, he served aboard the USS Maddox as the Korean War was drawing to a close. He also served on the USS Lexington and was a Commanding Officer of the USS Merganser, both out of San Diego, CA. He attended Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, CA, earning a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, and was designated a Engineering Duty Officer and reported to the San Diego Naval Repair Facility. In 1964, he was ordered to Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin to serve as Resident Supervisor of Shipbuilding to administer various shipbuilding contracts. In 1968, he reported to the Naval Material Command in Washington D.C., servings as a Technical Director and Program Manager for shipbuilding programs. He completed his active duty as the shipbuilding Industry Liaison Officer on the Director of Defense Research and Engineering Staff. After 27 years of commissioned service, he retired from the Navy and worked for Sperry Corporation, later Unisys, as an Engineer and Marketing Director until retirement in 1994. Both he and Madelene enjoyed traveling throughout the states, trips to Europe, many winters in Florida, and lots of time with family and friends in their retirement years together. Edwin had a great love for family and took pride in their accomplishments. He was active in Boy Scouts and other youth activities for many years. As a man of faith, he and Madelene were active long time members of Providence Presbyterian Church in Fairfax, VA. His wife Madelene of 63 years and their three children survive Captain Spar. Greg (Tina) Spar of Lincoln, NE, Jeanie (Gary) Feltz of Herndon, VA, and Brett (Kathy) Spar of Annandale, VA. Grandchildren: Natalie Spar (Scott Freeman), Nathan (Nicole) Spar, Jennie Spar, Stephanie Spar, Matthew (Julie) Feltz, Tim Feltz, Joshua Feltz, Isaac Spar, Madelene Spar, and Francis Spar. Great Grandchildren: Levi Spar and Ryker Spar. Two sisters and a niece preceded him in death. He was greatly loved by all. Memorial Services were held at Greenspring Village Chapel in Springfield, VA on Feb 24, 2018. Inurnment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

He attended school till the 8th grade at Dist. #8 and graduated with the Class of 1965 from Clearwater High School. On December 2, 1967 he was united in marriage to Deborah Rice at Concordia Lutheran Church in Clearwater. They celebrated 50 years of marriage. Rick lived and farmed around the Clearwater area all his life on the family farm. He was a member of Pheasants Forever and Whitetails Unlimited. Lifetime member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Clearwater and was a trustee for several years. Member of the "Earliest Coffee Group" at the Hiway Mart. He enjoyed raising pheasants, hunting, fishing and spending time with family and farming with his grandkids. Survived by his wife, Debbie Bolling of Elgin, NE and his children: Chad and wife Susan Bolling of Niobrara, NE and JoBeth and husband Brian Blecher of Pierce, NE. Four grandchildren: Ethan, Morgan, McKenna Blecher and Zack Bolling. Brothers; Larry and wife Julie Bolling of OR, Steven Bolling of Tilden, NE, Gary wife Chris Bolling of Elgin, NE, and sister, Diane Kraft of Neligh, NE. Numerous nieces and nephews and family. Barlow son of Kenneth and Frances (Spangler) Barlow was born on August 27, 1944 in Rural Ewing, NE. He graduated from Ewing High School in 1962. He enlisted in the United State Army at Omaha on March 14, 1963 he was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, MO and Schweinfurt Germany and was discharge on May 23, 1964 from Ft. Hamilton, NY. While in the service he was united in marriage to Pauline Jorgensen on May 28, 1963 in Mitchell, SD. They had 2 daughters; Janet and Susan and son, Monty Nelson. Ken had a passion for the good ole outdoors. Loved trapping, fishing, coon hunting, and Corn Husker Football and watching the Cubbies. Enjoyed telling stories to his grandkids and great grandchildren and spending time with his good ole friends! He was a member of Sander Legion Post #214 in Ewing. Survived by his wife Pauline of Ewing, NE. Diane Lucille Bolling was born September 20, 1936 in Royal, Ne to Oscar and Sylvia Mae (Leslie) Ziegenbein. She was the youngest of 10 children. Diane grew up on a farm South of Royal, attended country school, and graduated from Neligh High School with the Class of 1954. On June 2, 1956 she was united in marriage to Louis Richard Bolling at Neligh, Nebraska. They had on child, Douglas Lee, and resided in Neligh together for 51 years. Diane was very active in her community, serving as den mother for a local cub scout group, participated in the women's bowling league, served many positions at Grace Lutheran Church in Neligh, and was instrumental in the organization and construction of the new Neligh Senior Center. She also served 3 years on the Antelope County Area Board of Aging. Diane spent her pastime attending to family, quilting, and doing needlework. She had an avid love for cooking and travel. Through the years, she was employed by the Neligh Cleaners, Neligh Public Schools, and Antelope Memorial Hospital. Survived by son, Doug and Wendy Bolling of Neligh, Ne. 3 grandchildren, Krista Bolling, Mary Bolling, and Sara (Ian) Barnes. 2 great grandchildren, Andrew and Issac Barnes. Sister, Myrtle Blair of Winnetoon, Ne. Brothers, Herb Ziegenbein of Winnetoon, Ne and Harold Ziegenbein of Neligh, Ne. Preceded in death by her parents and husband.
