State Farm, State Patrol Team Up To Help Teens Drive Safely

The Ultra Interactive Driving Simulator was used at Neligh-Oakdale High School for the first time.

N-O students in grades 9-12 tried out the machine earlier this week and had many positive comments. 

This is how it works:
Once buckled in, the simulator works like an automobile with a steering wheel and foot pedals, but the driver uses three flat-screen computer monitors as they navigate through an array of scenes. Throughout the driving modules, weather conditions may change, deer or a pedestrian may cross the road. Other driving hazards and distractions may also test driving ability and awareness. If completed without an accident, the driver receives a score. While the trip may seem successful, drivers often have minor violations or warnings, such as following too closely, failure to signal turn, etc. 

In addition, the students would text or call their friend while driving to add to the distraction, which sometimes would cause a roll-over or another type of wreck to occur. This virtual situation is the only way we want teens to experience such an event! The simulator is offered free of charge and will be traveling to other area schools in the near future. It was purchased through a grant by State Farm Insurance Companies and awarded to the patrol as an interactive educational tool for teen drivers. This event was organized by Melissa Smith, agent at State Farm Insurance of Neligh.
