School Board Gives Updates On Various Topics

Neligh-Oakdale’s monthly board meeting was short lived with little discussion on the agenda items.

Most of the meeting consisted of updates from the school futures subcommittee, instruction committee, and the approval of the purchase of a new bus.

To begin the meeting, Superintendent Scott Gregory gave the board a little insight on where they were standing in the potential three-school merger. Since the first historical meeting, Gregory has met with Superintendents Dale Martin and Ted Hillman to discuss curriculum management as well as polish the agreement.

The three superintendents main focus was on the development of proposals on the potential curriculum. Each of them have take the initiative to find an experienced individual who was willing to draft a proposal to present to the 3-boards. This will then give the boards more options to look at.

Discussion from the instruction committee meeting came from Kenny Reinke and Scott Svatos who gave some insight on their recent visit to the new Columbus school. They explained how the school has included more programs of focus around the local strength and needs. This has also helped bring more engagement from the community into the school with a majority of school donations from the local businesses.

“They (local industries) ante up when they were asked to. But I think part of that is that they now get to see how they’re helping their labor force. So, it was good. Those kids have a lot of opportunities, “ said board member Scott Svatos.

To add to the school improvement, Ryan Koinzan updated the board on a new bus purchase. Although the bus is ten years old, after researching and contacting individuals, the board found the purchase to be very valuable to school transportation. Koinzan made the motion to approve with a second from Reinke to purchase the new bus under the depreciation fund.
