Reminder: Junior Fire Patrol Begins On sunday

The Neligh Volunteer Fire Department wants to remind everyone that Junior Fire Patrol begins this Sunday, and it is not just for Neligh-Oakdale students. 

Throughout the month of October, the Neligh Fire Department will host Junior Fire Patrol for students in grade third through sixth. The class will meet once a week on Sunday evenings from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at the Neligh Fire Hall.

The five-week class, which begins Sunday, October 1, will feature a variety of topics for students. During week one, students will learn more on the history of the fire department and get a tour of the station. In week two, they will learn how to use and practice with fire extinguishers and fire hoses. The third week will be based around fire escape plans for use at the home. Week four will provide a chance for students to see the Antelope County dispatch center. The fifth week will bring a fun ending to the class, with a Halloween and pizza party.

“With October being fire prevention month, we just thought this would be another fun way to help teach kids fire safety,” said firefighter Cris Kurpgeweit. “There are many similar programs being put on at other departments and we wanted to give kids a chance to enjoy the classes around here.”

​Sign up forms will be distributed to the schools before September 20. The class is not limited to just Neligh-Oakdale students and the Neligh Fire Department welcomes students from anywhere in the Antelope County area to join. If you did not receive a sign up sheet, there will be some on hand to fill out during the first night.
