Pouring concrete for the new Neligh-Oakdale track began early Thursday morning and is expected to wrap up on Friday.
The old track, which had large chunks missing throughout and was called a safety hazard by school officials, has been removed.
Construction on the track began March 16. Interim Superintendent Bill Kuester said the track is closed to the public through the month of May.
In January, the board accepted a bid to install the track for $419,000. Kuester said the $419,000 did not include improving the drainage of the track, which he said is part of the reason it deteriorated years ago.
With the new track, Neligh-Oakdale will be able to host meets again, although not conference or district meets since the track will only be six lanes.
A committee has been formed to collect donations on items for the track athletes, including hurdles.
