Old Mill Days Detailed For Neligh's Fourth Of July Celebration

Bath tub races are a new event added to Old Mill Days in Neligh. Three-person teams will race the bath tubs in a timed event. There is no entry fee, but participants must be at least 16 years old.

Featuring a new event and location change for some favorite events, the 2014 Old Mill Days in Neligh is sure to be a good time.

Adam Mortensen, Neligh Young Men's Club vice president, said he's heard nothing but good things about most of the afternoon events on the Fourth of July being moved from Riverside Park to in front of the Antelope County Courthouse. Those events follow the noon grand parade.

"I've had lots of people thank me for moving the turtle races and kiddie tractor pull to the courthouse lawn," Mortensen said. "A lot of people of all ages wanted to watch those events, but they didn't want to walk down to the park following the parade. Now, they don't have to leave downtown Neligh."

That's also the location of a new event, the bath tub races. The event will take place on Main Street following the turtle races. Three-person teams (ages 16 and older) will compete in a timed course for prizes.

"This is going to be a lot of fun," Mortensen said. "There are several towns around Neligh that have bathtub races, so we hope to have a lot of participants."

Two bath tubs - bearing the names of the NYMC and Neligh Volunteer Fire Department - were built for the races. Those participating in the event, which has no entry fee, can use one of those tubs or they can bring their own. Participants must be at least 16.

As always, July 4th begins with a breakfast/lunch at the Senior Center, a fishing contest at Fred Penn Park and the ice cream social in front of the courthouse.

Other events taking place following the grand parade are a horseshoe tournament in the park and the Stop Light Drags, which will be at the Neligh Airport from 2-6 p.m.

On Thursday, July 3, a scavenger hunt will be held in front of the courthouse at exactly 7 p.m. A street dance will follow at 9 p.m. featuring Lonesome Walker Band.

Individuals who would like to make a donation can do so by contacting any member of the NYMC or by donating online at www.NelighYoungMensClub.com.
