Neligh Volunteer Fire Department Holds Rope Rescue Class

​The Neligh Volunteer Fire Department recently received a grant that allowed them to get nearly $20,000 worth of new equipment.  Among the items received was a generator; rhino glass cutter, and rope rescue equipment.
 
Just this last Saturday, the department used the rope rescue equipment during their training.
 
Just last month, there was a grain bin rescue just north of Neligh. Multiple different agencies came to help, including the Central Valley Ag Emergency Response Team, which is a rope rescue and grain bin emergency team. 

​And now, the Neligh Volunteer Fire Department is ready and skilled to help with situations like last month’s.
 
 “Kind of a weird coincidence that that happened first before the training,” EMT and Firefighter Jared Jacob said.  “But doing that helped to set up for what we did today.”
 
Neligh Volunteer Firefighters put the skills they learned in the classroom, to the test on Saturday.
 
Earlier in the week they learned the basics of what to do during a rope rescue. Instructors from the state fire marshals office came to give hands on learning that can be helpful in many different situations.

“We can use it for a grain bin rescues, car wrecks if the go down an embankment, a ravine rescue, say if someone is out hunting, deer hunting or something like that, we can help with that too,” Jacob explained.
 
And the learning about these dangers doesn’t stop there, so many of the volunteer firefighters will continue to take different classes.
 
“We have the confined space rescue that is going to be up in Plainview,” Jacob said. “You can go on and do advance rope rescue, I mean it is kind of endless now once you start.”
 
Although Jacob plans to continue to learn, Saturdays class was still very important.
 
“Once you get that basics done though, it helps set up for everything else.”
