The Neligh Police Department is investigating an attempted vehicle break in that occurred in the early afternoon hours on Saturday.
According to Neligh Police Chief Mike Wright, a late-model SUV was the target of an attempted break in on Wednesday afternoon in the parking lot of Antelope Memorial Hospital.
Wright said the vehicle was likely targeted due to the owner's wallet being left out in plain sight. The would-be thief attempted to shatter the front window on the driver's side to gain access to the vehicle. The window did not shatter completely, so the suspect then proceeded to shatter the rear window on the driver's side but was unable to gain entry.
Wright said that it is fortunate that nothing was taken but it is important to remember not to give criminals the opportunity to do so.
"If you have to leave valuables in your car, be sure to leave them out of sight and lock your vehicle," Wright said. "Even if you get out for a few minutes, lock your vehicle and hide your valuables. If the window breaks just right, it can take just 10 seconds to get in and out."
