With eight medalists, including champion Dylan Kaup, the Neligh-Oakdale wrestling team finished third at the 20-team Amherst Invite on Saturday.

Coach Gary Davis said he was pleased that all eight wrestlers who competed earned medals.

"Amherst only places four out of six, so it is even more difficult to medal there," he said.

The Warriors were just nine points behind runner-up Plainview, which edged Neligh-Oakdale 129.5-120.5 for second place. Amherst won the team title with 224.5 points.

At 195, Kaup defeated Amherst's Jacob Martenson 11-5 for the gold medal. Finishing second for the Warriors were Devan Breuer (113), Garett Allemang (152).

Louis Herley (120), Will Paul (160) and Luke Jacobsen (285) placed third while Marquis Granville (132) and Colby Roland (182) were fourth.

"I was pleased with how we have competed in our last three meets, Columbus, South Sioux City, and Amherst," Davis said. "Now we need to keep improving every week, and try to peak at Districts and State. Dylan Kaup has two championships in a row, winning SSC and Amherst, he put in a tremendous amount of work in the weight room in the off season and it's paying off."
