Tales from the Fabulous First Grade Students
Our teachers, Mrs. Larsen and Mrs. Rotherham, welcome us each morning with a bright smile and a “Good Morning” or “Hello”. We are very busy in first grade. Every day we are learning new and exciting skills and would like to share them with you.
We are practicing sounds, reading wordlists, and individually reading stories in our reading mastery program. We enjoy the stories about talking animals because they are usually funny. October will arrive soon which means the start of Book-It. We want to work hard at reading to earn our free pizza!
New to our school this year is our Adventures in Language program. We are building our skills in grammar and writing. We have also been putting words in alphabetical order, writing words in our word bank, and looking up words in our picture dictionary.
In Math, we do calendar every day and are counting until we reach the 100th day of school. Our teachers say we have a long way to go. We have been practicing writing our numbers, working on position words, and have even started counting pennies. Addition and subtraction fact practice will begin soon.
Science Fusions is our Science program. We have studied about the things scientists do. We used our 5 senses and hand lens to observe things around our classroom. We just started talking about animals and are happy about this because animals are really cool!
Another fun thing in first grade is our “All About Me” bulletin board. Each student gets to decorate and bring their T-shirt poster and some of their favorite things to share with the class. In October, we are going to go to Norfolk and see the play Curious George at the Johnny Carson Theater. IPads and the Promethean Board are technology you can see us using in the classroom every day.
We want to thank our Moms and Dads for helping us with our school work and are looking forward to the many more things Mrs. Larsen and Mrs. Rotherham are going to teach us this year in first grade.
