Neligh Community Celebrates Being Flag Day Capital

The "World's Greatest Flag Company" was even busier than usual on Thursday.

In addition to its normal business operations, Blackburn Manufacturing Company staff and volunteers lined Highway 275 in Neligh with approximately 2,000 flags in honor of Flag Day. 

"We've been lining the highway with flags every year since June 10, 2015, when the governor named Neligh the Flag Capital of Nebraska," said Krista Schindler, Blackburn's marketing director.

Six residents and six employees from the local nursing home joined in the efforts, along with other community volunteers.

The Neligh Young Men's Club also put up flags throughout the town, as they do for numerous other holidays, making the highway dotted with American flags from top to bottom.

Blackburn Manufacturing has been in business for more than 65 years and helps boost the community in many ways. This year, the company set up a scholarship. Marty Beyer, a 2018 graduate of Neligh-Oakdale, was the recipient of the $500 Flag Day Scholarship.
