Neligh City Council Member Resigns During Special Meeting

With less than four months remaining in the term, Neligh Mayor Jeri Anderson must appoint a new member to the Neligh City Council. 

With regret, City Council members accepted Nancy Ofe's resignation at Wednesday's special meeting. Ofe submitted her resignation in writing to the council last Thursday as she will no longer be residing within city limits as of the end of September.

Ted Hughes made the motion to accept the resignation and to post the vacancy at three locations - the U.S. Post Office, Pinnacle Bank and Heritage Bank. Leonard Miller seconded the motion, which carried 3-0. Ofe abstained.

Ofe's resignation is effective immediately. A new council member will be appointed and will be the third individual to fill this term. Ofe was appointed in August of 2011 to fill the term vacated by Christy Underwood, who resigned in June 2011 when her family moved to Arcadia.

Ofe did not seek re-election. Hughes, the incumbent, along with candidates Stephanie Wanek and Dawn Wiegand, will be on the Nov. 4 general election ballot. 

Per municipal code, the Neligh City Council will give public notice of the vacancy, and the mayor will submit the name of qualified registered voter residing in city limits for appointment at the Oct. 14 regular meeting to fill Ofe's term, which is set to expire at the end of 2014.

The City Council shall then vote to fill the appointment. Should the council not approve the appointment, the mayor shall provide another name during the November meeting.
