Neligh Police Chief Mike Wright is warning local business owners to be aware of a scam involving their websites and domains.
This specific scam is from iDNS with an invoice informing businesses that it's time to renew their domain for their website. The invoice requires the business' credit card number and some of the invoices are not even for the domains they do not already own.
Carrie Pitzer, owner of Pitzer Digital LLC, said this is a common scam that regularly targets businesses because many do not know who to pay for their domain fee to and assume this is a legitimate bill.
"I advise our clients to always contact us before paying any hosting or domain fees," Pitzer said. "That two-minute phone call can save hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars. I've received the same documentation many times over the years, so it does regularly make its rounds around the globe. If you don't recognize the company name, then do not pay the invoice."
The Better Business Bureau has received many complaints about this company.
