Metschke Rings Victory Bell Signifying Cancer Free

Not a single fall sport has started, but the victory bell at Neligh-Oakdale has already rang. And it was loud and well deserved.

Neligh-Oakdale band teacher Nate Metschke was speechless Friday afternoon as Athletic Director Ron Beacom announced during the school's pep rally that Metschke would ring the victory bell in honor of now being cancer free.

Beacom said although there will be plenty of victories for the Warriors this year, none are greater than Metschke's.

"Our Warrior family, if you will, already got the biggest victory it's going to get this year," Beacom said. "Seven months ago, Mr. Metschke was diagnosed - as all of you guys know - with some cancer. It's a tough disease, and he was bound and determined to fight it and we were bound and determined we were going to help him. Here we are six surgeries later and 12 chemo treats later. On Wednesday, Mr. Metschke got a phone call from his doctor telling him that he's cancer free."

Became then invited the 3-12 student body to witness Metschke ringing the bell. Watch the moment in the video below.
