In honor of Arbor Day, the Neligh-Oakdale second-graders helped the Neligh Tree Board plant a Kentucky Cottonwood on Friday morning at Fred Penn Park.
"The second-graders study trees in school this time of year, and we always try to involve them in tree planting somewhere in the park," said Tree Board member Lauri Huffman. "They help us plant the tree, fill the dirt in, put the mulch on, and we talk about how trees grow and what they need."
Huffman said the Tree Board has been planting a tree with the second-graders for more than 30 years.
"This is wonderful," she said. "It's a culmination of everything we do throughout the year. We always plant trees in the parks, and this is always the first tree we plant of the year."
