More than 60 children participated in the annual Bike Rodeo on Friday, learning the importance of bicycle safety and receiving a new helmet.
The event was put on by the Neligh Police Department and the Neligh Public Library, with the helmets provided for free to families courtesy of the Neligh Young Men's Club and the Tschirren family of Neligh.
Neligh Police Officer Phil Hart reminded children about Token Tuesday - when practicing safe biking habits can be given a wooden token on Tuesdays that can be exchanged for either ice cream or a cookie depending on the location. Businesses involved include Casey’s, Subway, Mamas' & Nanas' and Cubby’s.
Neligh eighth-grader Kenzi Tschirren once again shared her story with the children about her serious biking accident four years ago when she was not wearing a helmet.
Youth were then fitted for bike helmets and allowed to test their biking abilities with an obstacle course outside of the library.
After cookies and Koolaid, two winners were drawn for a free bike from the NYMC and Tschirren family, as well as an Antelope County News T-shirt. Aubrey Dexter was the winner of the ACN shirt and Cameron Schindler won the bike.
