Two Neligh-Oakdale sophomores competed in the 2014 Nebraska State Cross Country Championships in Kearney on Friday afternoon.
Kasi Grosserode crossed the finish line in 21:54.5 to place 27th out of more than 130 runners in the girls Class D race. This was her first year running cross country.
"Our ultimate goal this weekend was to bring home a medal (top 15), and even though we didn't bring home a medal, we ran very well and gained some very valuable experience for next year," Coach Rick Eickholt said. "An interesting side note is that Kasi's time would have actually placed her higher (22nd) in the Class "C" race than she did in the class "D" race."
Jayda Chance came in 106th with a time of 25:02.8 in her second state appearance.
"Unfortunately, Jayda wasn't able to run at 100 percent," Eickholt said. "Jayda has battled an illness all week and still wasn't feeling well at race time. Due to the illness her time was about 2-3 minutes off her normal times."
The coach said he would like to thank all of the fans who traveled to the state meet to support Grosserode and Chance.
"I know it meant a great deal to the girls to see everyone there," he said.
