Did you know that 4 out of 5 car seats are used wrong? Could yours be one of them?
Protect your children and grandchildren by attending a Car Seat check event at the Neligh Fire Hall on Wednesday, Nov. 12. This event will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. If you have children or grandchildren ages 8 and younger, plan to attend.
Nationally Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians will be available at this event to assist you with the proper use and installation of your child’s safety seat and answer any questions you may have. Plan to attend this car seat event to be certain your young ones are traveling safety.
Safe Kids North Central is partnering with State Farm-Melissa Smith, Antelope Memorial Hospital and Neligh Fire & Rescue for this event.
All children need to be properly secured every time they ride in a vehicle, said Kate Kunz, coordinator for Safe Kids North Central.
"Most crashes occur near home and can be violent, even at lower speeds," Kunz said. "When used CORRECTLY, child safety seats can prevent injuries and save lives. The back seat is generally the safest place for a child to ride. While air bags can save lives, kids riding in the front seat can be seriously injured or killed when an air bag deploys in a crash.”
It is important to note that motor vehicle crashes are the number one killer of our children in Nebraska! Last year, during rural car seat check events in surrounding areas, it was found that 96 percent of child seats were being used incorrectly, putting those children at danger while traveling.
In Nebraska and nationally, unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death for children ages 14 and younger. The goal of Safe Kids and the organizations they partner with is to address major areas of unintentional injuries to children ages 14 and under. Ninety percent of these injuries could be prevented if families took simple steps necessary to protect their children.
