Blackburn Manufacturing promised to announce its "Yard Art Contest" winners Saturday night. Instead, they've announced more than that.
With over 20,000 marking flags proudly displayed around Neligh, the inaugural contest has been deemed not only a success, but overwhelming.
“This is absolutely overwhelming,” said Krista Schindler, marketing director at Blackburn Manufacturing. “We wanted to come up with a way for the community to get involved with Neligh being named Flag Day Capital of Nebraska, and people of Neligh have been amazing.”
Schindler said there are more than 20 displays around the city, which made choosing winners very difficult. Originally Blackburn Mfg. planned to choose the top three designs, but after seeing the Neligh Young Men’s Club display, Schindler said the company decided to offer a “Community Favorite” prize.
The NYMC built a hydraulic display with marking flags shooting out. The display is along Highway 275 next to Mitchell Machine.
“The NYMC really outdid themselves, so Blackburn Mfg. is donating $500 to the organization as both a prize and as a thank you for everything they do for our community,” Schindler said. “We cannot thank them enough for their volunteer efforts.”
Winners of the inaugural “Yard Art Contest” are as follows: 1st: Loren and Shelly Grosserode Family, 2nd: Joe and Jill McNally Family, 3rd: Monica Hansen.
Schindler said prizes, which are all community-based packages, will be dispersed on Saturday and are listed at the bottom of the story.
“We are proud to be based in Neligh and are proud of our community,” Schindler said. “We hope to build on this first year of Flag Day and do even more next year. On behalf of everyone involved - Blackburn Mfg. and the City of Neligh - thank you to everyone who participated and everyone who supports community development."
