Benefit Planned For Neligh Firefighter Battling Cancer

A benefit is planned next weekend for a Neligh firefighter battling cancer.

On Sunday, March 26, the Neligh Fire Department will host a pancake feed at the Neligh Fire Hall as a benefit for Terry Hughes. It will be a free-will donation and the hours will run from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Hughes is a seven-year member of the Neligh Fire Department, as well as an employee for the Nebraska Department of Roads. The Neligh Fire Department is putting on the pancake feed to help pay for the expenses of Hughes’s travel and hotel stays as a result of the dreadful news that he received in 2014 informing him that he had been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer.

Hughes received the 2015 “Employee of the Year” award from the Nebraska Department of Roads due in no short part to his bravery in overcoming his diagnosis as well as his unwavering work ethic that the community and state holds him highly for.

Dave Jacobsen, the Assistant Fire Chief of the Neligh Fire Department, had nothing but good comments to say about Hughes.

“Terry is the kind of person that would do anything for you. He’s also a focused hard worker. Even at Fire Hall meetings he can’t sit still because he’s always wanting to learn,” Jacobsen said.

The benefit will also include a gun raffle that will include a Bushmaster AR-15, a Browning A-Bolt III 30-06 Wood Stock and a Mossberg 12 GA pump shotgun in camo. 500 total chances for the raffle will be sold at $20 each.
