Area youth will soon be able to get a glimpse back in time to what country schools were like after the approval to move a local schoolhouse into Neligh.
The Antelope County Commissioners voted Tuesday morning to allow a school house located south of Clearwater to be moved into town and to be placed across the street from the current Antelope County museum. Jeri Anderson and Gloria Christiansen presented about the schoolhouse project at the meeting.
Once moved, the schoolhouse will be renovated to look as close as possible to its original look. Inside, the building will be set up like it would have been when in use, with additional exhibits showcasing the history of schools like it in Antelope County and Nebraska. The exhibit will be open to the public, and visitors will be able to tour it during regular business hours.
The Antelope County Commissioners voted to allow the schoolhouse to be moved into Neligh, placed on county property, and to be included under the county’s insurance coverage. Utility coverage will be determined at a later date.
However, before the project can begin, the Schoolhouse Committee has to cover $40,000. Questions about how to donate are to be directed to Jeri Anderson at 402-929-0224.
