Clearwater-Orchard spent nearly all night playing catch up on Friday in their game against Burwell, eventually losing 55-12.
Burwell jumped on top of the Cyclones early, scoring twice in the first quarter while holding Clearwater-Orchard scoreless. The trend continued in the second quarter when Burwell added 21 points to take a 35-0 halftime lead.
Burwell added another touchdown in the third quarter before Blake Hoke connected with Travis Kerkman for an 18 yard score to put the Cyclones on the board. Burwell scored once again in the fourth quarter before Creston Bertschinger returned the ensuing kickoff for a score. The Longhorns reached the endzone one more time, bringing the score to the 55-12 final score.
Hoke struggled to find consistency on the night, connecting on just nine of his 25 pass attempts. He gained 136 yards on those nine completions with a touchdown and two interceptions.
The Cyclone rushing attack never really got going either, with Bertschinger leading the way with just 14 yards.
Kerkman was Hoke's primary target on the night, hauling in three grabs for 38 yards and a touchdown. Bertschinger added three more catches for 67 yards.
Chris Kester led the Cyclones defensively, collecting 12 tackles and an interception on the night.
Clearwater-Orchard must now regroup in time for a match up with West Holt in Atkinson next Friday night.
