2020 Social Media - Sweet Sixteen
With March Madness canceled, our staff created the "Sweet Sixteen" candy bar bracket. We seeded 16 candy bars and built a bracket similar to the NCAA basketball tournament. Participants filled out their bracket prior to the start of the tournament. Each day we posted a Facebook poll question, pitting two candy bars against one another. We scheduled the games to be posted at the exact same time every day in a poll format and set it for 24 hours.
The daily poll created a lot of positive energy in the community with most poll questions having between 500-1,000 votes. Some of the comments were comical as readers started getting into the contest. Readers could participate by voting even if they had not turned in their brackets, so it kept everyone entertained and playing along. For those who turned in their brackets, they were constantly logging onto the site to check their scores, which led to more pageviews on the website.
We finished with nearly 15,000 votes in the contest and reached more than 30,000 people. It was a huge success. A few examples of the contest are embedded below.
