Elgin Public/Pope John opened the season in strong fashion on Friday night.
The Wolfpack made their way to Verdigre to take on Niobrara/Verdigre. The girls kicked things off, with EPPJ controlling the game from the opening tip in a 56-28 win. They held the Cougars to just seven first-half points on the night.
Three girls started the season in double figures in scoring. Calli Krebs led the attack with 12 points. Allyson Wemhoff and Paige Meis both added 11 for the Wolfpack.
The boys game proved to be a much more challenging affair. The Wolfpack led after one quarter, going toe-to-toe with the Cougars almost all night. EPPJ struggled to start the second half, being outscored in the third quarter 23-10. They mounted a thrilling comeback in the final frame, but ultimately were not able to come out on top in a 66-59 loss.
Ashton Evans nearly finished the night with a double-double, posting 16 points and pulling down eight rebounds. Hunter Reestman added 14 points and Kyle Schumacher accounted for 13.
