A Neligh restaurant closed its doors for good this week.
Economic Development Director Greg Ptacek confirmed that Mexican restaurant El Vallarta officially closed earlier this week. It opened in 2012.
"El Vallarta is no longer open in Neligh, which is unfortunate," Ptacek said. "It's my understanding that the business faced a lot of challenges, some due to rumors about possibly closing. That ultimately led to a lack of business that eventually did cause it to close."
Ptacek said the restaurant attracted customers from across Northeast Nebraska but saw those numbers decline once people began questioning whether or not it was open. It also went through several management changes and had difficulty retaining employees.
El Vallarta was located at 118 East Fourth Street and formerly was the Imperial Steakhouse. The building is owned by Doug Dennis and was leased.
Ptacek said the building has a great location right along Highway 275 and offers a large amount of seating and great atmosphere for dinning, whether it be formal or casual.
"The potential for this location is tremendous," Ptacek said. "Hopefully, we'll be able to work with the owner and find another business that can utilize this building."
