I have lived in Neligh for several years now and my family and I love it here. Why? Because we have so many nice people here! We don't have a high crime rate because we look out for each other, we respect each other. I love our church (Calvary Bible Church on 3rd street), I love my neighbors, I love our little grocery store Thriftway, the gas station where the workers know you by name, and how pleasant the workers are.
I love that even though I am the crazy lady that tried to keep a blind goat people still ask how the little guy is doing! I love that the lady at Subway knows which cookies I want before I order them. I love that people wave to me when I drive by and smile and wave when they walk their dogs, that I can walk to my mom and dad's house and don't have to worry about if I will be mugged getting there . . . . I love Neligh because I love the people here. I am proud I live here, I support Neligh. We need to love our neighbors, respect others opinions, and I think most of us do. I am blessed! Becky Williams, Neligh, NE * * * Letters To The Editor are not the opinion of the Antelope County News. On behalf of Blackburn Manufacturing Company and my production manager, we would like to offer a sincere public apology for a confederate flag flying at our business. While it was not the intention in any way to be a sign of racism or hatred, it was inappropriate and does not reflect the views of our company.
We apologize profusely to any and all who were offended and promise something like this will not happen again. Sincerely, Jennifer Blackburn-Nielsen, president Kelly Kosek, production manager * * * Letters To The Editor are not the opinion of the Antelope County News. Editor's Note: A public apology has been issued on this topic. Read it here.
* * * Can someone explain to me why the confederate flag was waving at one of Nelighʼs largest businesses? Was it in protest of the “Dukes of Hazard” being removed from cable? Is it a symbol of the company’s southern heritage? Is it representative of the first amendment protection of free speech? By all means, the first amendment is your right; our constitution ensures that as it should. And whether you want to wave a Nazi swastika banner or a confederate flag, you have that privilege. You could argue that, for you, the swastika represents “good luck” as it did thousands of years before Hitler morphed it into something else. You could argue that, for you, the Confederate flag represents “southern pride.” But the fact is, the swastika is now entrenched in a history of deep hurt and suffering for millions of people. And the Confederate flag has been representative of slavery and racism since it first flew. In other words, it’s very closely linked to deep hurt and suffering for millions of people. Would you fly the swastika in support of your German heritage? As a symbol of your right to free speech? The first amendment is your right. But my question is this: why do you want to use your rights as an American citizen to fly a flag so drenched in a history of hate? Are you trying to resist the dominance from the North? Are you voicing your disagreement with the Civil Rights Movement or the abolishment of slavery? Neligh was recently named the Flag Capital of Nebraska. Is this the flag we want to have representing our town? Because that flag is not representative of MY Neligh. And I hope it’s not representative of yours. Sincerely, Karmen Sauser Neligh, NE * * * Letters To The Editor are not the opinion of the Antelope County News. I am the founder of “We Support Neligh.” Even though some people are trying to twist this campaign into being about the annexation and recall, it is actually about being positive in the community in both your actions and your words.
I believe most Neligh residents are like me - fed up with negativity in the community. We are the silent majority. As my mom says, “Just because you’re the loudest, doesn’t mean you’re right.” Please be a positive role model for our youth who are watching you and deciding right now if Neligh is where they want to call home when they are adults. The actions of both residents and non-residents of Neligh reflect on all of us. I love Neligh. We have so many positive things going on in Neligh right now. Imagine what could be accomplished by using energy for good instead of trying to create negativity. That is what “We Support Neligh” is all about. If you want more information about “We Support Neligh,” please check us out on Facebook or www.WeSupportNeligh.com. Pledge your support with your actions and words. The silent majority is being heard loud and clear. We Support Neligh! Sincerely, Nate Metschke * * * Letters To The Editor are not the opinion of the Antelope County News. Our community of Neligh is a great place to live. Last week in Neligh, we enjoyed what Neligh is all about - conversation, discussion and different points of view. But the greatest part was support for both. I have to thank those who supported me with thoughts and prayers. That is a great help. And to you, Lord, for helping all of us. We have many people that are stepping up to support the system and thanks for the community where we live.
To finish with some wonderful words from a great lady from O'Neill: They have achieved success who have lived well, laughed often, and loved much; who has enjoyed the trust of pure men and women, the respect of intelligent men and women, and the love of little children; who has filled their niche and accomplished their task. In the end, no matter what we have achieved otherwise, how we made others feel while we were here is really all that is left of us when we go. Mayor Joe Hartz * * * Letters To The Editor are not the opinion of the Antelope County News. This letter is in reference to all the residents of Oakdale and surrounding areas who are casting “stones” at Megan Brandt for her behavior during her tenure as village clerk of Oakdale. Please take a hard look and ask yourselves if any of you are without fault and have never made a mistake!
First and foremost, we want to acknowledge that we DO NOT condone Megan’s actions in any way. She was wrong in doing what she did that caused undue hardship for the village of Oakdale. At Megan’s sentencing, we listened to the Oakdale Board President say that there was not enough money in the account to make the $25,000 lagoon payment for 2014 and, in thinking back, they were also short for the same payment the prior year. That’s when he started to take a hard look at the books. Really! After two years? Why not check the books in 2013? What about the trust the people of your village put in these elected board members? Haven’t they violated your trust? There has to be checks and balances at all stages of the process! If I were a resident of Oakdale, I would be livid as to how inefficient the performance of the town fathers was in this situation and demand a total recall vote for all board positions. Remember the old saying “It takes two to Tango”? Well, it apparently only takes one to hang. In conclusion, we would like to reiterate that what Megan did was totally wrong and she is paying the price for her actions! But, remind yourself of what Jesus said to us all “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.” Sincerely, (Megan’s family) Gary & Renee Rhamy Nick & Meredith Hughes Jeff & Michelle Sandin * * * Letters To The Editor are not the opinion of the Antelope County News. |
