To kick off this Friday of the Antelope County Fair, every"bunny" was excited to watch 4-Hers and Clover-Kids show off their rabbits for the Rabbit Show at 8:30 a.m.
Two youth in the senior division and 11 kids in the junior division hopped to and pointed out different traits of their rabbits to impress the judge, Shannon Ahlman. Kody Qualset was selected as the senior showmanship champion, and Emma Qualset was awarded the junior showmanship champion. Autumn Forbes earned runner-up for the junior showmanship division. Four first responders puckered up for a good cause during the break in the Extreme Bull Riding on Thursday night.
Dave Jacobson, Bob Moore, Steve Simonson and Jared Jacob participated in a Kiss the ? put on by the Women of Neligh. Jars were set up around the community for people to put money in towards who they wanted to win. Jacob was announced as this year's winner. Previously, the winner had to kiss a pig. This year, the person or thing being kissed was kept a secret, and it was revealed after the rodeo clown leaned in and kissed Jacob. The other responders also received a pie to the face. The pies were "presented" to them by members of the Women of Neligh. Fans at the bull riding on Thursday night watched as Antelope County youth stole the show during the mutton bustin'.
Nearly 17 kids at the Antelope County Fair participated in the mutton bustin' during a break in the Extreme Bull Riding competition. Each participant received a dollar for their efforts. Spectators received a thrilling night of bucking bulls on Thursday as the Extreme Bull Riding was held at the grandstands at the Antelope County Fairgrounds in Neligh.

Judges selected about two dozen projects as the best of their class, making them eligible for the Nebraska State Fair. More than three dozen 4-H members stepped out of the arena and into the shoes of a 4-H judge on Thursday.
The kids analyzed a variety of animals, including beef, swine, sheep and goats, trying to decide how a judge would rank them from first through fourth place and distinguishing their specific characteristics. The top two in each age division were: Seniors: Logan Mueller, Champion Travis Rudloff, Reserve Champion Intermediate: Dillon Moser, Champion Cassidy Bearinger, Reserve Champion Junior: Irelyn Bearinger, Champion Autumn Forbes, Reserve Champion Two 4-Hers took all the honors in the 2018 Antelope County Dairy Show.
Trevin Hanson earned champion in senior showmanship, champion non-producing and a purple ribbon for his spring yearling. Baylee Chessmore earned champion in junior showmanship, reserve champion non-producing and a purple ribbon for her summer yearling. The Sandhills Legion Riders escorted the "Remember Our Fallen" tribute to Riverside Park early on Thursday afternoon. The photo display will be in the park pavilion throughout the fair, where people can visit and pay their respects.
There is no cost to visit the display. In a team penning competition of 24 teams, Don Schmitz played a part in the top three placing teams.
Following the grand opening at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Antelope County Fairgrounds, the Calcutta for team penning took place. From there, the competition for team penning began, with each team working to herd cattle sporting their designated number into the pen. At the end of the night, the first-place team of Phillip Wright, Don Schmitz and Patrick Mahoney earned a time of 1:35:89 on six head. The second-place team of Bob Frey, Don Schmitz and Jon Mazour received a time of 2:23:39 on six head. In third place, Tammi Nervig, Don Schmitz and Phillip Wright earned a time of 2:02:87 on five head, and the fourth-place team of Harold Fischer, Steve Skibinski and Jim Kuiper finished with a time of 2:31:77 on five head. Mark Salber was also a lucky winner of the first three teams, as he won the Calcutta for the first, second and third-place teams. Corey Curtis received the Calcutta for the fourth-place team. For the junior team penning competition, Macy Zehther additionally managed to be on all three of the winning teams. The first-place team of Macy Zentner, Bailey Lehr and Ashleigh Nelson received a time of 1:20:34 on two head. Macy Zentner, Brooke Lehr and Ashleigh Nelson came in second with a time of 1:52:60 on one head. The team in third consisted of Macy Zentner, Bailey Lehr and Brook Lehr. They earned a time of 1:56:09 on one head. |
