Several families were honored Saturday evening at the Antelope County Fair for their 102 years of farming ownership.
Sharon A. Klein, Linda L. Varn, Larry A. Braband and Kathy Fullerton earned the Nebraska Pioneer Award for their continuous farming. Started in 1916 by Augustus and Tobias Lange; Klein, Varn, Braband and Fulleton kept the family farm going for over 100 years. The families were awarded with an engraved plaque and gatepost marker as permanent recognition of the milestone by Antelope County Farm Bureau President Steve Pellatz at Saturday's fair. The award recognize Nebraska farm families who have consecutively held ownership of land in the same family for at least 100 years (Pioneer) or 150 years (Heritage), respectively. Since its inception in 1956, nearly 10,000 farm families statewide have received the Nebraska Pioneer Farm Award. The Nebraska Heritage Farm Award, established in 2014, has been awarded to nearly 75 families. Antelope County resident Gordon C. Baker earned the prestigious Nebraska Pioneer Farm Award for his family's 100 years of farming ownership.
Alva E. Baker originally started the Baker Farm in 1918 and Gordon has carried on the tradition. Baker, along with his wife Darlene and the rest of his family, was honored at the Antelope County Fair Saturday evening with an engraved plaque and gatepost marker as permanent recognition of the milestone by Antelope County Farm Bureau President Steve Pellatz at Saturday's fair. Callie Heithoff won the 11-13 year-old group, with Gage Thiessen taking reserve champion. In the 8-10 division, Tyler Suckstorf was the named the grand champion with his calf, Hudson. Kaylee Frey earned reserve champion honors. The Clover Kids (5-7) and Peewees (five-and-under) finished up the show with their calves. Numerous youth in 4-H herded their cattle for the 2018 Antelope County Fair Beef Show on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
Senior showmen started off the series of competitions and were followed by intermediate and then junior showmen. Trevin Hanson opened the show by winning the Senior Showmanship title and Merinee Vaughn captured the Junior Showmanship crown. Larissa and Merinee Vaughn took grand and reserve grand champions, respectively, in market barrows. Hanson won the market gilt grand championship with his pig, Dum-Dum. Merinee Vaughn took reserve champion honors. Aaron Watson showed that country music is "Never Going Outta Style" during his concert on Friday night at the Antelope County Fair in Neligh.

The competition kicked off with senior showmanship, followed by the juniors. Winning the top awards in the sheep show were: Senior Showmanship Codey Snider, Champion Austin Good, Reserve Champion Junior Showmanship Merinee Vaughn, Champion Brooke Forbes, Reserve Champion Breeding Lambs Taytumn Clouse, Champion Codey Snider, Reserve Champion Lottery Larissa Vaughn, Champion Merinee Vaughn, Reserve Champion Lottery Record Book Merinee Vaughn, Champion Jonah Johnson, Reserve Champion Market Lambs Merinee Vaughn, Champion Austin Good, Reserve Champion Carcass Codey Snider, Champion Austin Good, Reserve Champion Rate of Gain Codey Snider, Champion Kaimberlynn Clouse, Reserve Champion In the Small Animal Round Robin on Friday, Angel Qualset was deemed the overall champion and most knowledgeable on small animal species.
The four Senior Showmanship champions of the Dog, Cat, Rabbit and Poultry Shows competed in the round robin to find out who had the best overall expertise on these small animals at the Antelope County Fair. The round robin started at 4 p.m. with four judging stations set up with a superintendent from each species were set. Trevin Hanson, Senior Showmanship champ of dogs, Angel Qualset, champ of cats, Kody Qualset, champ of rabbits, and Allison Stineman, champ of poultry, rotated from table to table for two minutes at a time. They each answered questions about the three animals they hadn't previously shown. Angel Qualset will have her name proudly displayed on the board for years to come. She also will receive an embroidered jacket to represent her accomplishment. Poultry exhibitors of all ages flocked to the Antelope County fairgrounds Friday to show off their birds.
