Two People Transported After Hitting Five Calves Near Tilden

Two people were transported to the hospital after their vehicle struck and killed five calves on Highway 275 late Saturday night.

Antelope County Deputy John Shaver said John Kight of Neligh was traveling westbound from Tilden when he struck five black cows at about 11 p.m. 

The accident occurred about 1 mile west of Tilden on Highway 275. Kight was driving a Chevy Trailblazer owned by his passenger, Jackie Sparr.

Shaver said several dozen calves raised at Coe Cattle Company Feedlot, but not owned by the company, were out of their pens at the time of the accident.

“Jackie stated that the whole roadway was covered with cows. She said there were cows everywhere,” Shaver said.

He said a pickup and trailer later struck at least one of the dead calves shortly after Kight’s vehicle. 

Shaver said the rest of the cattle were accounted for shortly after the accident.

Both Kight and Sparr were transported to Antelope Memorial Hospital in Neligh by Tilden Rescue. They were treated and released.

“No one was seriously injured. Luckily these were yearlings and not full grown,” Shaver said.

Responding to the accident were Tilden Fire and Rescue, the Tilden Police Department and the Antelope County Sheriff’s Department.

Shaver said the accident remains under investigation. ​
