AMH Nurse Recognized, Inducted Into Honor Society

An RN from Tilden who works for Antelope Memorial Hospital was recently recognized after winning the grand prize for Distinguished Academic Writing for Graduate Level Course Work.

On March 29th, Sheila O’Brien, RN, was inducted into Nebraska Methodist College’s Student Writer’s Honor Society in Omaha. 

Ms. O’Brien is currently attending Nebraska Methodist College’s Nurse Educator Program to obtain her Master’s of Science degree in Nursing. One of her education classes was about different teaching methods and required a presentation to be given.

She chose to present a simulation about communication in nursing ‒ during shift changes. Her professor later submitted her article about the simulation to NMC’s Writing Across the Curriculum Committee. Ms. O’Brien’s article was later chosen to win the grand prize at the graduate level.  

“I was honored that my professor chose to submit my article to the Writer’s Across the Curriculum Committee,” said Ms. O’Brien. “I was also very surprised and honored to win this special award.”

I owe my nursing skills to my co-workers at Antelope Memorial Hospital, added Ms. O’Brien. They’ve always been supportive in helping me to learn and become a better nurse. I learned a great deal working at AMH ‒ it’s truly a special place to work. I plan to continue my employment there ‒ on an on-call status.

“In 2015, Sheila played a key role in the implementation of bedside reporting at Antelope Memorial Hospital,” said Merry Sprout, RN and AMH Director of Nursing. “Bedside reporting is designed to be inclusive of the patient ‒ making him/her a part of the reporting process.”

In February, Ms. O’Brien took on the role as nursing instructor at Northeast Community College. She will continue to serve as NECC’s clinical instructor for nursing students at the AMH location. 

Sheila resides in rural Tilden. She and her finance, Keith Meyer of Orchard, are engaged to be married on June 10, 2017. Mr. Meyer is employed at Sanne’s Service in Clearwater as a mechanic. Her parents are Ed and

​Ruth O’Brien of rural Tilden. Her siblings include one sister, Sarah Luebe, and four brothers, Eddie, Mark, Billy and Joe. She is a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel’s Catholic Church in Tilden. Her hobbies include spending time with her nephew, Matthew Luebe, and fixing up her new home. She will graduate from Nebraska Methodist College in May 2017 with her master’s in Nursing.
