Six Still Battling As EV Remains 3rd in Team Standings

Elkhorn Valley remains third place in team standings with six individual wrestlers still fighting for their rightful spot on the podium.

In the hunt for the Falcons are Adam Miller at 113, Dillon Stewart at 120, Darren Stewart at 138, Joshua McFarland at 145, Brock Schaecher at 170, and Shawn Klinetobe at 182.


Miller, Schaecher and Klinetobe are still battling for medals in the consolation rounds. Dillon and Darren Stewart and Joshua McFarland are all heading into the semifinals and guaranteed medals.

Hunter Bennett picked up a win in the first round consolations, but was defeated in the second, ending his season.

Warrior fans need to arrive a bit earlier in O'Neill on Tuesday for the Neligh-Oakdale boys' first-round C2-6 subdistrict basketball game.

NSAA switched the game times from the bracket that was originally released. The #4 Warriors will now take on #1 Ainsworth in the first game of the night, not the second, and tip off at 6 p.m.

The Elkhorn Valley girl's basketball season came to an end in the D1-5 subdistrict final in Battle Creek on Thursday night.

The #2 Lady Falcons fell to #1 Randolph, 48-32, and ended their season with a 17-7 record. EV struggled to get their offense going early in the game and fell back, 14-5, at the end of the first quarter. Randolph started firing even hotter in the second quarter and took a 20-point lead heading into the half. The deficit proved to be too much to overcome in the final half and the Cardinals advanced to the district final. Randolph will play North Central on Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. in Niobrara.

Amber Miller led the way for the Lady Falcons with 15 points, followed by Olivia Nall and Hannah Ollendick with 5 apiece; Jasmine Wiese and Karissa Evans with 2; and Ashleigh Nelson and Brianna Werner with 1 each.

The #3 EPPJ girls nearly pulled off an upset over #2 North Central in the D1-6 subdistrict game in Ainsworth on Tuesday night.

A tie score at halftime, the Knights were able to hold the Wolfpack to just 3 points in the third quarter and eventually topped EPPJ, 49-41. North Central will advance to take on #1 West Holt on Thursday night.

A big fourth quarter wasn't enough to propel the Lady Warriors past Creighton in the first round of the C2-6 subdistrict game in O'Neill on Tuesday night.

The Neligh-Oakdale girls ended their season with a 44-39 loss to the #1 seed, but they never gave up. Down 18 points heading into the final quarter, the Lady Warriors forced turnovers on defense while putting up 24 points of their own. Creighton will advance to play #2 Ainsworth on Thursday.

Paige Furstenau led the N-O girls with 11 points and an impressive 7 steals in the post-season matchup. Haley Kerkman also put up double figures with 10 points, followed by Trinity Kurpgeweit with 6 points and 10 rebounds, Jaclynn Hixson with 5 points, Brooke Frey 3, and Rachel Higgins and Bailey Frey with 2 apiece.

The Elkhorn Valley girls picked up a big win over Osmond on Tuesday night to advance in the D1-5 subdistrict.

Seeded #2, the Lady Falcons dominated the #3 Lady Tigers, 64-48, at Battle Creek. They advanced to the subdistrict final which will be played against #1 seed Randolph on Thursday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. in Battle Creek.

In the first round game, EV came out firing and jumped out to an 8-point lead at the end of the first quarter. They continued to build on their lead and pulled away to win by 16.

Amber Miller and Hannah Ollendick came up with some huge plays to lead EV. Miller led all scorers with 23 points, and Ollendick earned a double-double with 21 points and 14 rebounds. To top it off, they each swiped 4 and 5 steals, respectively. 

Olivia Nall had a very impressive night as well, earning a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Delilah Sierra and Bri Werner each added 2 points in the win, and Karissa Evans had 1.

The Warriors pulled within four in the final quarter, but the Renegades were able to hit some critical free throws to edge out Neligh-Oakdale at home on Monday night.

Two Warriors led the way as Nate Buck and Austin Rice each drained 17 points for Neligh-Oakdale. Buck was hot from 3-point land as the post player popped out beyond the arc for 4 treys. Others scoring on the night were Hunter Charf with 10 points and Beau Murray with 6.

The Warriors will host Niobrara-Verdigre on Friday in their final regular season game.

Clearwater-Orchard ended its girls basketball season Monday night in their D1-6 Subdistrict game at Ainsworth.

The #5 OC girls fell to #4 Boyd County, 54-37, in the first round game of the subdistrict. Boyd County jumped out to a 16-4 lead in the first quarter, making it difficult for the Cyclones to catch up.

Brooklynn Chipps had a strong night for OC, scoring 11 points and grabbing 8 rebounds. Other contributors were Allison Kerkman with 8 points, Katie Stearns 7, Julia Thiele, Julian Tuttle and Grace Rittscher 3 each, and Elly Herley 2.

During a Thursday night matchup, the Wolfpack teams split games against the O/C Cyclones at their last home game. 

The lady Wolfpack swept the Cyclones finishing 59-20 to put prepare them for sub-districts this week. Finishing the first quarter Leading Elgin Public/Pope John in scoring was Lydia Behnk and Allyson Wemhoff tying for 11 points, and Paige Meis and Calli Krebs following right behind with 10 on the board. For the Cyclones, Brooklynn Chipps lead with 7 points, and Julia Thiele and Katie Stearns with 4.

Turning over to the boys game, the Cyclones and Wolfpack kept both fans on their toes with a back and forth score to the Cyclones by surprise. Clearwater/Orchard took the lead with a last minute three pointer for a 29-26 going into halftime. 

Continuing their lead, OC was able to pull ahead finishing the game over the Wolfpack 70-48. Leading the cyclones in scoring was Blake Hoke with 23 points, Jake Long following just behind with 20, and Ryan Wilhelm rounding them out with 17. For the Wolfpack, Kyle Schumacher lead the team with 17 points, Ashton Evans with 11, and Hunter Reestman just behind with 10.

Neligh-Oakdale wasn't able to weather the storm Saturday as West Holt defeated the Warriors in a game that had been postponed due to snow.

The Warriors hung in there during the first half of play, trailing 36-21 at the break, but eventually fell to the Huskies, 68-42.

​Every point mattered as the Neligh-Oakdale wrestling team edged Plainview by nine points to capture the D-1 district runner-up trophy Saturday afternoon in Weeping Water.

Five Warriors punched their ticket to next week’s state tournament by finishing in the top four at the meet — juniors Cameron Wilkinson and Andrew Herley, sophomore Kaleb Pofahl and freshmen Brock Kester and Caleb Payne.

Neligh-Oakdale went into Saturday’s action with 10 wrestlers vying for a state berth, including Cody Booth, Cade Wilkinson, Colton Klabenes, Jayden Arehart and Dawson Kaup. 

Kester was the lone Warrior to win a district title. Wilkinson, Herley and Pofahl all finished runner-up while was fourth.
