EPPJ Girls Hold Off Burwell To Advance To Tourney Final

The Elgin Public/Pope John girls continued their hot start at the Madison Public Schools 2016 Holiday Tournament.

The Lady Wolfpack held on to top an upset-minded Burwell squad 47-36. The Longhorns came out strong in both halves, ending the first quarter trailing just 15-14 and outscoring the Wolfpack in the third 13-8. However, the Wolfpack were able to adjust to the Burwell press and height by using their sound defense and fast pace attack, just as they have all season. 

Individual statistics for the Wolfpack were unavailable at this time.

After the girls took the win to move on, the boys hoped to do the same against the Longhorns. However, Burwell's length was too much for the Wolfpack as they fell 64-16. They managed just 13 points in the first half before being almost completely shut out in the final half of play.

Just one Wolfpack player shot better than 33 percent from the floor, Kenny Bush who finished with six points on 75 percent shooting to lead EPPJ. Ashton Evans, in his first play of the season, added five for the Wolfpack on two of nine shooting.

The girls move on to face Madison in the championship game Friday at 2:30 p.m. The boys will take on Emerson-Hubbard for a chance at third place at 12:45 p.m.
