Shabram Named Class D1 Behrens Coaching Award Winner

After taking Clearwater-Orchard from a 1-7 season to an 8-4 mark, Cyclone coach Jeff Shabram has been recognized with the Mike Behrens Coaching Award.

Huskerland Prep announced Shabram as the Class D1 recipient of the award.

The Mike Behrens Coaching Award was designated to recognize a coach’s ability to bring out the best in his team, creating a sense of overachievement. Coach Behrens was a coach at Omaha Roncalli in 2003 who despite having a roster of 20 in Class B reached the state finals with an undefeated record.

A year ago Clearwater/Orchard football won one game. After a three-game losing streak back at midseason there was little reason to suspect the Cyclones would eventually play in the state playoff semifinals.

But they did.

Coach Shabram and his team collected themselves after a 10-point loss to Boyd County to win their final three regular season games, including a thrilling 38-37 victory over favored Neligh-Oakdale on the final night of the regular season.

After winning an expected first-round victory over Dundy County-Stratton, Coach Shabram's team scored a huge 38-36 upset of previously unbeaten Perkins County in the second round, truly one of the great victories of the season. Clearwater/Orchard followed that up with a 42-28 revenge win against Elgin/Pope John before losing to Burwell in the state semifinals.
