Pastor To Debut Food Truck At Orchard Celebration Days

An Orchard pastor has taken his hobby to a new level.

Pr. Troy Watson, who serves as the pastor of Cornerstone Bible Church, will be serving food at the Orchard Celebration on Friday and Saturday from his Badang Food Cart.

“I almost call it a hobby,” said Watson of his food cart and catering business. “It is a little bit of a side business. I’ll be doing Antelope County Fair here in a few days, and I just got my permit back up so I’ll be going to Lincoln and serving on the sidewalk.”

The Orchard Young Men’s Club, of which Watson is a part of, usually serves the food for the Celebration. This year, they’re taking on so many events that food was not one of the things they wanted to take care of.

“The Young Men’s Club has taken care of it for several years now and they handle the dance on Saturday night, and so they do quite a bit of things,” explained Watson. “Like they do the Road Rally also. They’ve gotten a little busy with the (amount of ) people that we have. So instead of them having to deal with the food—last year they had to schedule people out the whole time—they wanted to just let it go and not have to worry about it.”

Watson was glad to take on the task.  

Even as a child, Watson says that he enjoyed cooking. “I was the weird little kid that whenever I was seven or eight I’d be watching cooking shows on TV. Watching Julia Childs and all these other shows. I’ve just always liked to do it.”

With that much food to cook, it would be logical to assume Watson has help. However, Watson, who has served food at other community events such as the Maronde Benefit, says that he does all the cooking. “I usually do it mostly by myself,” he said. “Sometimes I’ll have my wife or a high school girl come out and serve with me, but as far as cooking goes, I do it all.”

For the Orchard Celebration, Watson will be serving an eight-dollar Pork Sandwich Barbecue dinner on Friday and from the cart on Saturday. 

“(On the cart) I have three different quesadillas, I have a burrito, and I have like a barbecue pork thing,” said Watson. “So it’ll be a jerk chicken quesadilla, a smoked pork quesadilla, and a beef fajita quesadilla. And then I have a burrito that kind of has everything in it. Then a potato dish and a pork dish.”
If you just can’t get enough of his food, Watson says he plans on taking the cart out to Lincoln once a month starting in August.

“I do Thursday and Friday nights,” said Watson about taking his cart out to Lincoln. “I do about once a month. I’ve been out there the last two weeks, and I’ll be back in mid or late August, and I’ll do it about once a month or so.”
