Orchard Students Celebrate Constitution Day With Mock Trial

All grades were involved as the Orchard School celebrated Constitution Day with an educational and fun assembly.

To begin the assembly, Jana Wilhelm highlighted important topics within the Bill of Rights and provided an introduction for the play, which was a mock trial put on by the upperclassmen. The play, titled Goldilocks vs. the Three Bears, demonstrated the different aspects of a mock trial.

Upperclassmen involved were Tommie Peed (attorney representing the Three Bears), Kirby Willats (Gold E. Locks), Nalleli Zermeno (attorney for Gold E. Locks), Erin Schwager (Mom A. Bear), Ira Lampert (Pop A. Bear), JoCee Johnston (Babe E. Bear), Holly Schacht (Mrs. Locks), and Principal Cathy Cooper (judge).

In the play, the Three Bears attorney argued that Gold E. Locks did not use good manners when she proceeded to enter the Bears’ home, eat their porridge, break their chair, and sleep in their bed. However, the attorney for the family of Gold E. Locks supported the theory that she had used good manners because Gold E. Locks had been invited into the Bears’ home to eat, stayed to thank them, but fell asleep. To support each side, several witnesses testified in the case, resulting in the judge requesting input from the audience (K-12 audience). The school voted that Gold E. Locks was found not guilty of poor manners, and the trial was adjourned.

Cathy Cooper explained, “The student actors did an awesome job, and the rest of the student body and staff enjoyed this tribute to our Constitution, so it was a great way to honor Constitution Day.”
