Orchard School Board Approves Summer Projects

The Orchard school board members met for another monthly meeting, with much of the focus on summer projects.

Among the summer projects discussed were gym lights, freezer, security cameras, lobby restrooms and extension gates. It was decided to wait on security cameras until Principal Cathy Cooper could do further research. The board also decided to wait on the extension gates to block off the hallways during sporting events.

Custodian Tony Tabbert was present to discuss the possible summer projects more in detail. One of the projects he talked about was new lights for the gym. It was figured that replacing the current lights in the gym would save around $11,000-$12,000 each year because they would be more energy efficient. The lights in the gym were one of the approved summer projects.

Another approved summer project was installing a walk-in freezer for the kitchen, to be paid for out of the hot lunch fund. It was discussed that the kitchen currently has chest freezers so the walk-in freezer would open up space to be used as storage. The walk-in freezer would also help store the beef received for the Beef in Schools project.

Other items discussed during the meeting were the sports uniform rotations, staffing updates, and extra duty assignments.

The next board meeting is set for June 4 at 10 a.m.
