Orchard Library Volunteer To Read During Pool Breaks

Kids at the Orchard pool are being exposed to more reading this summer.

Kate Watson, a member of the Orchard Library Board, has started reading to the children during the pool break time every Thursday as a way to keep the kids interested in reading throughout the summer.

Donna Hamilton, Library Director, said they started the program last year because some kids never make it into the library. On weeks when Kate is unavailable to read, another library board member will step in for her.

Hamilton said, “The idea is to expose children to books during the summer, which also helps with their reading when school starts up again.” The idea was taken from another library that had great success with the program.

Hamilton also mentioned that the library will be hosting story and craft time every Monday in July at 10:30 a.m. for all ages. The theme for story and craft time is “Libraries Rock,” with music and rocks being the crafts.

Summer Reading is also underway at the Orchard Public Library, in which readers earn prizes as they finish 140 minutes of reading. Within the summer reading program, kids can track their progress on a special chart, come in and tell the librarian about what they read and then earn their prizes.
