OC 7th Grade Learns How To Perform CPR

On Tuesday, March 28, the Orchard-Clearwater 7th grade class received CPR training from Jenny Simmons, RN, Faith Regional’s Chest Pain and Stroke Coordinator. Faith Regional began providing training to schools in February 2017 with a goal to visit 54 northeast area schools this year.

Simmons presented Orchard-Clearwater with American Heart Association’s CPR in Schools Training Kit™ and taught students how to perform hands only CPR. The kit, donated by Faith Regional in partnership with Nucor, enabled students to learn the lifesaving skills of CPR in just one class period. One kit alone can train hundreds of people.

“About 80% of cardiac arrests occur in non-hospital settings, often at home, with fewer than 10% of victims surviving. Basic CPR can sometimes be enough to keep a person alive until first responders arrive. By taking hands-only CPR kits to schools to teach students is one way to equip our communities with the basic knowledge and skills to save a life,” Simmons said.

The CPR training involved watching a video that covers information about recognizing when someone is having a heart attack, calling 911 and performing CPR until emergency responders arrive. Simmons demonstrated how to do chest compressions while students practiced on inflatable mannequins.

“As students graduate and move one to their next phase in life, they will find themselves in many social situations. Being able to respond in the case of an emergency without being afraid is the training we want to give these students,” added Simmons.
