California Bound Biker Hit By Nebraska Storms

Nebraska storm systems delay travel time for 47-year-old California bound biker.

Ian Alexander, resident of Michigan, set out for a long journey to the west coast that inspired him two centuries ago. After several years of putting this ride off, Alexander, with a little push from his wife, finally decided to pack his bags and start pedaling.

“My wife finally said, ‘This is your summer. Take it and go.’”

Starting August 2nd, around the southside of Chicago, Alexander’s long trek began. Pedaling through Illinois, to Iowa, and finally arriving into Nebraska via Sioux City, he came across his first challenge as the storm systems that had recently hit Nebraska took a toll on his travel time. Hoping to wait out all of the major storms, Alexander took the 16th off and rested in Plainview, Nebraska.

From health to the politics of today, Ian Alexander had multiple reasons to begin his journey this summer. Due to his career in computer technology the last 20 years, he had lost touch with his active side and found himself sitting at desk, and typing all day for several years.

“My doctors put me on blood pressure medication, so I finally said to myself, ‘It’s time to get active.’”

On top of his health, Alexander voiced that today’s politics was also a major motivator.

“If you watch too much CNN, you lose your positive outlook of the country. I like the idea of riding and meeting people. Everyone I have met has been absolutely spectacular. It’s nice to know that there are still good people in spite of our current politics.”

His journey has been a perfect reminder of the kindness in people despite their differences.

​“I like to take the temperature of the country, and just how everyone is doing.”

Taking each state one week at a time, Alexander will continue his journey on highway 20 through Wyoming, making a pit stop in Idaho to see friends, continuing on to Nevada, and finally reaching his final destination of California.
