Funeral Services For Milan 'Mike' Magwire

Funeral services for Milan "Mike" Magwire, age 97 of Tilden, Nebraska, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday July 14, 2017, at Peace United Church of Christ in Tilden.  Pastor Theta Dame will officiate with burial in Tilden City Cemetery. 

Military honors will be provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7603, American Legion Post 170 and American Legion Riders.

Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Brockhaus-Harlan Funeral Home in Tilden.

He died Monday July 10, 2017, at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk, Nebraska.

Milan “Mike" Magwire was born August 4th 1919, he was the third of ten children born to Vester H. and Alma (Matzen) Magwire in a little two story house on a farm eight miles south and four west of Tilden, Nebraska. Milan was baptized and confirmed at Buffalo Creek Church. He passed away on July 10 at Faith Regional Hospital in Norfolk at the age of 97.

Mike attended rural school at victor Hill and Closter before graduating from Tilden High School, with the class of 1938. During high school he worked for the local veterinarian and moved to Indiana after graduation to continue working with the same veterinarian. After a year in Indiana he moved back to Tilden to farm with his father. In 1941 he moved to California where he worked for Lockheed Aircraft working on the Hudson Bomber and later on the fighter plane P-38. He served our country in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946. After returning to Tilden he started to work at the Tilden Oil Company. In the spring of 1949 he went to work at Johnsons Ford Garage. He stayed with that job as a mechanic and later salesman till it closed in 1969. A few months later he started up a repair shop, Magwire Auto Repair. In 1973 he went to work for the School District as a bus mechanic and driver. He stayed with the School until his retirement in 1985. As a side line from 1948 until retirement he also enjoyed farming a small acreage raising some sheep and cattle buying some small homes and remodeling or cleaning them up for resale.

He was married to Mildred “Millie” Paulsen on May 2, 1948 in Neligh. The coupled lived in Tilden their entire life.   Mike was a member of Peace United Church of Christ, serving on the church board. He also served on the Tilden School Board and President, was a volunteer fireman and Fire Chief, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a lifetime member of American Legion Post 170, and helped with the summer Scouts program for several years. Mike was a recipient of the Good Neighbor Award and the Outstanding Citizen Award.

Milan is survived by his two children Patricia Magwire of Tilden and Donnie (Rhonda) Magwire of Columbus; two grandsons Ryan (Katie) of Prosper TX and Tanner (Lindsey) Magwire of Tilden; two great-grandchildren Kashton and Hadley Magwire of Prosper TX; two brothers John “Jack” (Maxine) Magwire and Dean (Collette) Magwire all of Lincoln, NE; two sisters Margret “Shug” Paulsen of O’Neill, NE and Irene Martin of Neligh, NE.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Millie; sisters Florence, Ruth, Marian, and Euna; and one brother Raymond.

Memorials may be made to American Legion Post 170 of Tilden.
