Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Brockhaus-Harlan Funeral Home in Tilden.

George died Tuesday, January 24, 2017, at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk, Nebraska.

George Edwin Fox was born in Tilden, NE. at his parent’s home on June 6, 1919, to James A. and Jenny Evangeline (Chapman) Fox.  He attended school in Tilden, graduating with the Class of 1939.

He entered the Army Air Force in 1940 to 1945, serving as a radio operator on a PBY Catalina air/sea Rescue Plane in the Pacific Theater as a Sergeant.  While in the service, he met Barbara Sue Hodges of Nashville, TN on July 5, 1942, marrying her on December 26, 1942 in Franklin, KY.  They celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary this past month. To this union, nine children were born: Sharon, George, Sue, Jim, Laura, Marilyn, Don, Richard, and Karolyn.

George worked as a carpenter for Beckenhauer Construction of Norfolk from 1947 to 1973, before moving to Fort Myers, FL., working for Rutenberg Homes until 1982. He then continued working in construction and remodeling until he was in his 80’s. He was a member of the Winkler Road Baptist Church in Ft. Myers, Fl. They moved back to Tilden full time in 2009.

George was a member of the American Legion Post 170 for 57 consecutive years, and also a member of the IOOF for several years while in Tilden. His favorite pastimes were playing cards, dominos- chicken tracks, Cribbage, and doing Cryptograms and board puzzles until recently when his vision declined.

Up to the end, George had excellent recollection of past history and people in and around the Tilden area, able to name people and where they lived on different farms and in Tilden, dating back to the 1920’s.

Survivors include his wife Barbara of Tilden, children, Sharon (Lee) Klein of Norfolk, George Fox (Peggy Congelton) of Tilden, Sue (Dennis) Kleider of Omaha, Jim (Mary) Fox, Laura (Don) Rutjens, Marilyn (Ron) Eymann, all of Tilden, Don (Ann)Fox of Lehigh, FL., Richard (Joann) Fox, Cape Coral, FL, and Karolyn (Larry)  Noughton, Ft. Myers, FL.  He was adored by his 33 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren, who loved him for more than the tootsie rolls and dollar bills that he gave them. He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Jean Fox of Cedar Rapids IA, and Patty Fox of Ft. Myers, FL; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Eva Fox, brothers, Ralph, Ira (Babe), and James Leroy, sisters, Ruth and Alice, and infant great grandson, Elliot Fox Kottas.
