Funeral Services Announced For Karolyn Fisher

6/14/2014

Comments

Memorial services for Karolyn K. Fisher, age 75 of New Braunfels, Texas, formerly of Tilden, Nebraska, will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at Brockhaus-Harlan Funeral Home in Tilden with John Petersen officiating. Burial will be in Tilden City Cemetery with Military Honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7603 and American Legion Post 170, both of Tilden.

Brockhaus-Harlan Funeral Home in Tilden is in charge of arrangements.

Karolyn died Thursday, June 12, 2014, in New Braunfels, Texas.

Karolyn Kay (Nelson) Fisher, daughter of Harlan V. and Bernita “Bert” (Gee) Nelson, was born January 14, 1939, at Ainsworth, Nebraska. Karolyn attended Ainsworth High School, then attended Kearney State College in Kearney, Nebraska, where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree. A woman ahead of her time, Karolyn entered the United States Army on September 27, 1961, and would serve her country during the Vietnam War era.

On May 5, 1962, Karolyn was married to Carl N. “Bud” Fisher, Jr. at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. During her lifetime, four children were born to Karolyn: Don, Bill, Bob, and Vickie. As Bud was in the service, they lived in various places during their marriage: Alabama, New Jersey, California, Virginia, and Washington State, and overseas in Bangkok, Thailand, and Wurzburg, Germany. The couple always dreamed of living on and operating a farm upon Bud’s retirement from the service, so the family moved to Tilden, Nebraska, and began working on establishing their own farmstead north of town. While preparing their future farm home, Bud was presently serving in active duty in the Vietnam War. In 1970, while working on their farm, Karolyn received word that Bud’s helicopter was shot down in Vietnam. Facing the challenges of being a widow and a single parent, Karolyn moved her young family to Kearney. After all of the children were grown, she returned to Tilden, where she resided until moving to Texas on October 1, 2013 to be with her daughter.

Karolyn, who proudly served her country as one of the earliest women to make her career in the military, was a member of the American Legion. While Karolyn’s children were growing up, she was very active with little league baseball. She died Thursday, June 12, 2014, in New Braunfels, Texas, attaining the age of 75 years, four months, and 29 days.

Karolyn is survived by her children, Don (Marilyn) Swett of Denver, Colorado, Bill (Barbara) Fisher of Omaha, Nebraska, Bob (Fran) Fisher of Guyton, Georgia, and Vickie (Gary) Bauch of New Braunfels, Texas; six grandchildren, Ryan Bray of Anchorage, Alaska, Alexis Dvorak of Fort Riley, Kansas, Rachel and Kate Bray of New Braunfels, Texas and Alison and Jennifer Fisher of Omaha, Nebraska; three great-grandchildren; siblings, Ron Nelson of Tilden, Nebraska, Marilyn (Charles) Harlan of Tilden, and Cheryl (Doug) Tassemeyer of Tilden; as well as nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl N. “Bud” Fisher, Jr.; father, Harlan Nelson; mother, Bernita “Bert” Nelson; and grandson, Matthew Bray.
