Neligh-Oakdale not only won its first-ever ESU 8 Quiz Bowl championship Wednesday morning, but the Warriors pitched a shutout -- and had to defeat St. Mary's back-to-back -- for the title.
As the ESU 8 champion, Neligh-Oakdale moves on to state competition in Holdrege on April 29 at the Nebraska Prairie Museum.
Having lost earlier in the tournament, Neligh-Oakdale had to beat St. Mary's twice to win, which is the school's first in the 25-year history of the Quiz Bowl. Twenty-one teams participated at the event, held at the American Legion in Neligh.
In the first championship, Neligh-Oakdale topped then-undefeated St. Mary's 35-25, forcing the deciding match. The Warriors then defeated St. Mary's again 50-0 for the out-right title.
Students on Neligh-Oakdale's team are seniors Jordan Chelle and Kristin Rice, juniors Chase Kallhoff and Bryce Frey, sophomore Kasi Grosserode and freshman Rachel Higgins. April Knust is the Quiz Bowl sponsor.
