The students at Neligh-Oakdale's West Ward Elementary spent the day at the Neligh Fire Department to celebrate Fire Prevention Week.
Throughout the day, each grade had the opportunity to tour the department and learn more about our local volunteer firefighters. Students split up into groups to check out the equipment, learn about what to do in the case of a fire, and meet their local firemen.
"We bring all of the kids up here, show them a tour of the fire station, the trucks, give them some fire safety tips, and then we will go inside the meeting room and give them a little lecture on what to look at in the house for fire prevention stuff. What to do if there ever is a fire in their house, where to go, make up an escape plan, make sure parents are checking their smoke detectors. Because there are a lot of parents that like to pop the batteries out because they are annoying. So we are hoping to install in those kids to make sure that mom and dad are putting the batteries back. Or to get some smoke alarms in their house. Just fire prevention stuff," Jared Jacob.
The Neligh Fire Department is hosting classes for the youth each Sunday in October from 6-7:30 p.m. to teach kids fire safety to a deeper level.
