News Channel Nebraska After many delays over 18 months, the trial of a Neligh man charged with sexual assault has been set. The trial for Darryl Lierman is set to begin August 14. Lierman is charged with several sexual assault charges, all of which are felonies. Back in July of 2015, Lierman was arrested after allegations of sexual assault of a child and child abuse were investigated. Lierman was originally charged with 11 felonies, but after nine months of court proceedings, his felony charges were reduced to eight. The prosecution and the defense argued on whether or not the state would be able to be allowed to call a child abuse expert as a witness. Madison County Attorney Joe Smith said, “This ruling affects the case big time. It says what experts can testify to. In Nebraska, experts in child abuse cases can testify to very few things, which keeps prosecutors and the defense from going astray.” After a lengthy pretrial, Mark Johnson continued the pretrial to May 11 at 10 a.m. Trial is expected to last more than a week. |
