Wolfpack Win First State Match In Team History To Advance

For the first time since the two schools decided to co-op sports, Elgin Public/Pope John has won a state volleyball game.

The Wolfpack took down Ansley-Litchfield in the first round of the 2016 Class D1 State Tournament Thursday at Lincoln East High School. After dropping the first set 25-23, EPPJ powered back to win the next three sets 25-16, 25-20, 25-21.

The Wolfpack's strong hitters stepped up in a big way to lead to the win.

Liz Selting, Amy Nelson and Grace Henn all recorded double-digit kills, putting down 19,17 and 11, respectively. Selting also had a huge day from the service stripe, recording 12 aces.

Defensively, Jordan Mescher, Calli Krebs and Baylee Wemhoff all had impressive days. Mescher brought up 27 digs, Krebs accounted for 16 and Wemhoff recorded 10 of her own. 

Wemhoff had a spectacular game spreading the ball to her playmakers, recording 25 assists. Allyson Wemhoff recorded 19 assists of her own while Nicki Payne was responsible for nine assists.

The Wolfpack now await the winner of the second match of the day, Dundy County versus Meridian. Game time will be at 9 A.M. Friday at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
