Wolfpack Score First Win Of Season During O-C Homecoming

With both teams looking for their first victory, the Wolfpack brought disappointment to Clearwater-Orchard's homecoming as the Cyclones threw five interceptions on the night.

Elgin Public/Pope John scored the first four touchdowns of the district game and handed the Cyclones a 52-24 loss at the Orchard field. The Cyclones were held to just 38 yards on the ground while the Wolfpack powered for nearly 300 rushing yards, averaging 4.6 yards a play. Chad Bode carried much of the load with 115 yards on 27 carries but never found the end zone. 

The Wolfpack grabbed onto a 26-0 lead thanks to a pair of touchdowns from both Kyle Kallhoff and Seth Schumacher. Kallhoff ran for two one-yard scores while Schumacher added one on the ground and one through the air when he connected on a 16-yard reception to Andrew Fangman.

The Cyclones stopped the run and found the scoreboard in the second quarter as Zach Martin hit Trevor Mlnarik with one-yard pass, making it 26-8 halftime. Martin was 14-of-27 pass for 227 yards with three interceptions and two touchdowns.

The Wolfpack responded with a pair of Andrew Fangman scores on the ground from 9 and 3 yards out in the third quarter. Fangman made it three straight touchdowns thanks to an 18-yard pass from Schumacher. The Cyclones ended the run with a 65-yard strike as Martin connected with Spencer Volden. The senior had 130 yards receiving while Andy Kerkman added another 93 yards.

Both teams exchanged touchdowns again in the fourth quarter as Fangman scored from 5 yards out and Kirby Willats from 1 yard.

Defensively, senior Kyle Heithoff had seven solo and 14 assisted tackles for the Wolfpack. Martin and Blake Kester each recorded five solo tackles and 13 assisted for Clearwater-Orchard.

The Wolfpack (1-4) will host North Central (3-1) on Oct. 3 while the Cyclones (0-4) travel to Boyd County (1-3) on Oct. 2.
