Wolfpack Can't Get Offense Going, Lose Big In Opener

It was a tough night for the Elgin Public/Pope John Wolfpack as they drew an opening night match-up with last year’s D1 runner-up, Burwell.

Burwell started off fast and never looked back. They used their size and experience to take advantage of the Wolfpack’s youth. That advantage lead to a 28-0 lead at the end of the first, a lead that was extended to 42-0 by halftime. Burwell added 14 points in the third and 6 in the fourth to win the game by a final score of 62-0.

Senior Chad Bode flashed his skills in the first quarter, gaining 39 yards on the ground, including a 17 yard run. However, he left the game after going down with an apparent arm injury on the first play of the second quarter.

With Bode out, the offensive focus turned to a combination of sophomore quarterback Hunter Reestman and sophomore running back Kyle Schumacher. They weren’t able to do much damage against the stout Longhorn’s defense, combining for just 34 total yards for the game.

The loss drops the Wolfpack to 0-1 on the year. Coach Randy Eisenhauer and crew now turn their focus to their showdown with High Plains September 2 in Polk.
